NJ 4-H eRecord Book-Pilot
The New Jersey 4-H eRecord book is a project by New Jersey 4-H to adapt the current 4-H project record book into an electronic format that could be completed on a computer using Adobe Acrobat Reader 9 software (freeware). When completed the saved document may be printed out for signature by the club member’s parent(s) and club leader.
As computer use is broadly adopted the move towards a form that may be completed by computer—rather than printed out and completed by hand—seems a natural transition. Given this option we believe 4-H members may choose to use a computer version of the traditional 4-H project record books.
Some of the benefits of using eRecord books include:
- If traditional pen and pencil completion of record books has been an obstacle, the option of a computer-based form may be an incentive to complete project record books.
- Members may add photographs of their project animal, their club, activities and other pictures
- Computer entries will be more legible for readers (parents, leaders, 4-H staff, etc.).
- Digital files will allow for record book copies —allowing lost hard copies to be replaced
- Leaders may review record books in progress more easily
- Members will be able to re-purpose information from pages that repeat from year to year as well as to complete forms that are submitted annually
- In time the digital medium will allow 4-H members to incorporate audio and video into their project record books. 4-H Members will be able to include video demonstrations or recordings of their public presentations.
